The Association of Youth Mentors
The Association of Mentors, is dedicated to advancing the practice of youth mentoring worldwide. An initative of The Mentoring Lab, The Association of Youth Mentors is run by experienced practitioners and researchers in the field of youth development, who have seen the transformative power that mentoring relationships can have in the lives of young people, and also recognised the need for greater coordination, quality standards, and support for those delivering this important work.
Our mission is to promote excellence and expand access to high-quality youth mentoring everywhere. We believe every young person should have the opportunity to benefit from high quality mentoring and role modelling from youth practitioners and volunteers. This vision directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in the areas of No Poverty (Goal 1), Quality Education (Goal 4), Decent Work and Economic Growth (Goal 8), and Reduced Inequalities (Goal 10).
To advance this mission, the Association of Mentors has three central aims:
- Strengthen the youth mentoring field through professional development, advocacy, and knowledge sharing.
- Support the implementation of high-quality, evidence-based mentoring programs globally.
- Increase public understanding and support for youth mentoring as a key strategy for positive youth development and poverty reduction.
We will pursue these aims through five core objectives:
- Provide training, technical assistance and networking opportunities for youth mentoring practitioners.
- Develop and disseminate standards, guidelines and best practices for effective youth mentoring.
- Conduct and support research to build the evidence base on youth mentoring impacts and innovations.
- Engage in public education and awareness efforts to build understanding and support for mentoring.
- Advocate for policies and investments that can expand both the quality and reach of youth mentoring initiatives.
As part of this work, the Association has authored a comprehensive Youth Mentoring Toolkit and established Quality Standards for Youth Mentoring Programs. We have also delineated key Mentoring Roles and Responsibilities to guide effective practice.
